A platform for voices supporting women's rights

News: Miley Cyrus – are we just “slut-shaming”? (New Statesman)

miley-cyrus-VMA-1Amidst the over-articulation of Miley Cyrus’ nudist tendancies, New Statesman questions whether this young artist is really the devil incarnate, or whether we are in the habit of “slut-shaming?”

Female Report! interprets the advent of women’s rights as giving women the freedom of choice.  Whilst not everyone, understandably,  takes to Ms. Cyrus’ scantily-clad videos, it should be respected that she has chosen to do that. Whether it be as a result of insecurities about her lack of talent (as has been stated), or otherwise, Ms. Cyrus if nothing else is certainly demonstrating that women have increased self-determination over their own bodies.

It is important that we ask important questions before berating her to such an extent. Would we be judging her if she were one of the famous Pussy Riot punk group? Band member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova famously protested by kissing female police officers and part-took in a live sex performance in a biology museum. What would we call her readiness to take off her clothes? Similarly, in support of the Pussy Riot group, Madonna took off her shirt during a live concert in Moscow to reveal the band’s name across her back. Do we only look down on nudity when it is not directly expressed as a contribution to women’s rights and Feminism?

Furthermore, I’m sure Ms. Cyrus (if asked) would state that her eagerness to be provocative and nude is a celebration of her sexuality as woman – something that was long oppressed and still is in many parts of the world. Every insult thrown at Ms. Cyrus for stripping naked in her videos could be retorted with any number of reasons why it is positive for women’s rights.

Admittedly, there are concerns about the misinterpretation younger fans may glean from her videos, however it is our job to educate young women. It is our responsibility to teach girls that the sight of female expression and sexuality is not a crime, but neither is it a substitute for talent or education and it is certainly not a tool to be exploited to “get ahead” in life, it is simply a choice.
