A platform for voices supporting women's rights
Despite conservative members of the Catholic Church being keen for the Pope to preach fire and brimstone, Pope Francis argues that the church’s position on controversial issues such as abortion and gay marriage are already well known. Instead, Pope Francis says that first and foremost “Ministers of the church must be ministers of mercy above all.”
However, CNN questions how realistic it is that this new shift in tone will be filtered through church, especially as the pope made no mention of any discernible shift in catholic teaching. CNN also points out that despite the Catholic Church appearing to be controlled by the elite members of the Vatican, it is entirely decentralised. As such, it makes shifts in direction, even if publicly stated by the pope himself, difficult to control.
It seems the judge of whether this new vision will permeate the church as a whole, is if we see increasing commitments to public demands for transparency of church finances and reprimanding child sexual abuse. Until concerted efforts are made in this regard, Female Report! wont hold its breath for advocacy in women’s and homosexual rights.
