A platform for voices supporting women's rights
CNN have reported on the horrific story of Rawan, an 8-year-old girl who reportedly died after sustaining internal bleeding on her wedding night. Despite there being some confusion around the facts of the story and an apparent lack of cooperation from local authorities, it is believed that 8-year-old Rawan died from internal bleeding and damage to her uterus and other organs, just a few days after her marriage to a 40-year-old man.
The case has caused outcry in Yemen and across the international human rights community and has resurfaced the debate over illegalising child marriage in Yemen, which is currently legal at any age. Despite attempts to raise the legal age of marriage to 17 in the past, the move was seen as “un-Islamic” by the country’s hardliners and was never passed. However the Yemeni Minister for Human Rights, Hooria Mashhour has now publically stated “enough is enough” for child marriage in Yemen, stating “Many child marriages take place every year in Yemen. It’s time to end this practice.”
